CGS Hawk Aviation

CGS Hawk Aviation Update- The CGS Hawk is one of the Legacy brand names in the light sport and ultralight aircraft industry. This year at the U.S. Sport Aviation we met the new owner Terry Short, but he wasn't quite ready to do an interview.

At Sun N Fun 2017 Terry celebrated his first year in business, and has moved the CGS Hawk factory to Lake Wales Florida, where he is manufacturing the full line of Hawks under Short Aircraft Services. Terry had two of his models on display at the show, a single place that was complete and ready to fly and a two place in kit form that he was using to promote the latest innovations and improvements to the kit.

Terry along with his son Chris have made a number of design changes to the two seat Hawk, the first and most notable being that they have elimated the "zipper style door" common on the Hawk models and replaced it with a "hard door kit" which uses a door frame and a window panel of lexan. This allows the use of standard aircraft fabric covering materials to be used on the fuselage section of the airframe, and adds strength to the cockpit area.

The two place CGS Hawk comes in with an empty weight of 472 lbs when powered by the Rotax 582, with a gross weight of 1100 lbs this gives over 600 lbs of useful load! Currently the craft is equipped with two 5 gallon tanks, but Terry is working on wing tanks, with a capacity of 7 gallons per wing.

The Hawk II is also available with the HKS and Rotax 912 four stroke aircraft engines.

Other improvements include a new instrument panel design. While it still features several conventional instruments Terry has added a feature from Guardian Avionics, a docking station which lets a Mini iPad be installed in the panel that is removable by simply pressing in on it and pushing sideways.

The addition of a Telas Instrument then gives Terry his airspeed and full up aviation instrumentation, while an MGL electronics instrument takes care of all the engine instruments.

For access to the rear of the panel, Terry has mounted in on some soft mounts and added a hinge to allow it to fold down for easy access.

A skylight has been added over the cabin area, which gives the rear passenger excellent visibility and works well with the folding wing.

The landing gear saddle and wheel spindle have also been updated for extra strength, adjustablity and ease of repair.

Terry is also offering powder coating on the main boom fuselage. This not only improves the looks of the Hawk but adds to it's durability by helping to prevent corrosion.

Light weight electric flaps and electric trim are also now available to Hawk owners. The CGS Hawk line of aircraft are currently available in kit form.

Build times are expected to be in the 150 hour range for an experienced builder, with a first time builder able to complete his or here project in 300 hours. One of the reasons for the low build time are that the wings and fuselage come pre-built by the factory.

The factory is currently working on their SLSA and ELSA models, which has to be gone through again because Short Aircraft Services is now the new manufacturer of the Hawk line of aircraft. Terry indicates that single seat, ultralight and experimental and two seat aircraft KITS are currently available and can be delivered in as little as four weeks.

Both the single and two seat Hawk aircraft can be equipped with a number of float and amphib float systems for those looking to fly on water. Terry also indicated that he is equipped to supply parts and service to all of the thousands of CGS Hawk customers flying worldwide.
